
Kathie moved to Austin in the early 1990s to pursue her master’s degree and Ph.D. at the University of Texas after graduating with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in American Studies and went on to teach in higher education at UT Austin and the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey. She later worked with Humanities Texas, the state partner of the National Endowment for Humanities.

Kathie’s community service includes volunteering as a member of the Settlement Club and serving as a board member of the Austin History Center Association, as a founding board member of the Sobering Center, past chair of the Ending Community Homelessness Coalition (ECHO) Advisory Council, and as past president of the Bouldin Creek Neighborhood Association.

Kathie passed hundreds of legislative directives that strengthened affordability, environmental stewardship, public services, and tenant and worker rights. Some of her major accomplishments include:

Kathie is a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, and her two daughters attended and graduated from AISD schools (Bryker Woods Elementary, O. Henry Middle School, the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, and Austin High School). Her daughters are now students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
