Residents of House District 49 and Texas families across the state are finding it harder to pay rising costs. Our state legislature needs to increase support for programs that help families meet their basic needs.
I will prioritize:
- Support for small businesses and industries providing good jobs
- High quality, affordable childcare
- Expanded Medicaid and access to affordable health care
- Investments in food system planning and programs to keep Texans fed
- More affordable housing across the state
- Housing and services for Texans experiencing homelessness
- Tenant protections
- Property tax reforms that make it easier for renters and homeowners to stay house

I have a proven track record of initiating and advocating for programs and policies that lower costs and provide opportunities for those who need them—and I will bring these values to the State House.
Among many other actions, I:
- Helped pass more than $600 million in affordable housing bonds
- Initiated affordable housing projects on city-owned land
- Introduced measures to preserve existing affordable housing and to require new developments to create affordable housing
- Created “right to return” policy that gives preference in affordable housing developments to long-time Austinites
- Championed tenant protections and anti-displacement strategies
- Expanded and improved services and resources for individuals experiencing homelessness
- Passed Austin’s first-ever homestead exemption
- Initiated action against Travis Central Appraisal District to help lower the tax burden on homeowners
- Successfully opposed a 12+% utility rate hike, helped expand utility assistance for low-income customers, and introduced a fair payment plan to help prevent utility cutoffs
